Chicago – Bree Mills, award-winning filmmaker and Chief Creative Officer at Adult Time, was recently featured in Drew Turney’s latest AskMen article, “Can the Porn Industry Teach Consent?”, where she shared insights into how the adult industry can influence cultural conversations about consent and sexual communication.

In the piece, Mills underscores Adult Time’s mission to approach adult entertainment differently, focusing on creating ethical content that fosters awareness of critical issues like consent. “Our mission is to do porn differently,” Mills stated. “We live that mission not just in what we put online but in how we run sets, work with our community and positively influence adults who watch our content.”

Mills highlighted Adult Time’s 2023 PSA campaign Consent is Sexy as part of a broader effort to educate viewers about the realities behind the fantasy of adult content. The campaign provided a behind-the-scenes look at how boundaries and consent are established on set, offering a stark contrast to the unrealistic depictions often seen in traditional porn.

“People need to be educated that [the porn clips they watch] are fantasies,” Mills said. “If they see the work that goes behind them, it helps them realize the difference between the fantasy and the people making the fantasy.”

Acknowledging that many people’s first exposure to sex comes through adult content, Mills emphasized the industry’s responsibility to positively influence viewers’ perceptions of intimacy and communication. “We’re not accountable for being sex educators, but we’re definitely where a lot of people go to as their first reference point,” she explained. “I’ve translated that feeling of responsibility into the work.”

Mills also discussed the creative challenge of integrating meaningful messages about consent into adult entertainment without disrupting the viewer’s experience. “The job of a writer and director is to find ways to ‘Trojan horse’ important messages that don’t feel like a public service announcement but show good behavior within the content,” she explained.

Adult Time’s progressive approach highlights the evolving role of the adult industry in shaping conversations about sex and consent by prioritizing transparency, ethical practices and thoughtful storytelling, as Mills and her team continue to lead the way in redefining how adult content can educate and empower audiences.
